The STOP Technique

A one-page tool that teaches young people to interrupt fear and rage — on the feed, and everywhere else.

Jonathan Haidt, Jean Twenge, and Scott Galloway are forcing a debate America needs to have: age limits, phone-free schools, gates around the platforms. They're right to force it — and the gates will take years, and every gate ever built leaks. The kids already inside the machine can't wait for legislation.

So while we debate the gates, here is something we can put in kids' hands today. The STOP Technique is a four-step interrupt — Sense the surge, Touch the anchor, Observe the design, Proceed by choice — built on the Thought-Stopping tradition of the Silva Method and used in real classrooms for decades. If the researchers are campaigning for clean water, this is teaching handwashing. Both matter. Only one is free, printable, and teachable in ten minutes.

Download it. Print it. Hand it to a teacher.

No email required. No catch. Free forever. Schools, teams, and youth organizations may copy, print, and co-brand it — just keep the technique text and attribution intact.

Teach it in ten minutes: have students recall a post that made them instantly angry — and where they felt it in their body. Practice the anchor together: "STOP," one breath, three fingers. Run the four questions on a harmless example. Ask what they'd choose from calm. Two minutes a week until it's a reflex. Written for middle school and up — because the youngest students are the most vulnerable, and they need it on day one.
